About
Making the Invisible Visible is a multi-layered, multi-format, multi-discipline communication campaign whose main aim is protection of underwater biodiversity. The main objective of the action is to translate complex scientific data into language understandable to wider public so to better understand environmental threats and the benefits of nature protection regulations.
The main results of the action are a series of artistic outputs-related conversations with targeted audiences and the conference bringing together artists, scientists and decision makers. The synergy of scientific inputs, artistic outputs and the mediation around and between different stakeholders has resulted with the attendance of all relevant decision-makers at the final conference whose main topic was advocating for a No Take zone in the territory where the Island-Trapped Waves phenomenon has been scientifically proven (Director of the Institute for Environmental and Nature Protection, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition, Director of the Fisheries Directorate at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Croatian National Tourist Board - product manager for nautical tourism etc).
Concept
In a time of increasing environmental anxiety and hopelessness, we wanted to highlight positive examples and the power of nature to self-regenerate, but also not diminish the threats and the responsibility of individuals to become aware and contribute to the nature regeneration. The backbone of the project is the naturally occuring Island-Trapped Waves phenomenon and the local and scientific communities working in tandem in order to instate a specific protection zone. At the same time, the topic of protection inevitably brings certain restrictions, which can become cause for a clash of interests. Through the project, we are working to bring awareness to threats. A central focus is the proposed No Take zone in the area where the Island-Trapped Waves phenomenon has been scientifically documented. The campaign builds on the opportunities protection creates for ecological recovery and nature’s capacity to regenerate, while recognising the threats that can undermine its effectiveness: coastal construction, nautical tourism and sea traffic, rising sea levels, and overfishing. It creates a space for mediation between stakeholders whose interests and responsibilities may differ, including the scientific and artistic communities, fisheries, tourism, public authorities, and local residents. This dialogue addresses both the anticipated ecological benefits of protection and the practical effects of restrictions on those who use and depend on the sea, acknowledging that a No Take zone must be supported by wider efforts to address environmental pressures. By making these interdependencies and tensions explicit, the project encourages informed discussion about individual and collective responsibility, the distribution of benefits and burdens, and the conditions needed for effective and equitable implementation.

13.09.2024 — LAB852
LAB852’s debate (13 September 2024) focused on intergenerational and interdisciplinary exchange. A lecture by Prof. Zrinka Ljubešić opened the session, followed by a microscope-based diatoms workshop and collaborative activities designed to activate local memory around marine and forest ecosystems. Hosted in the small town of Jelsa on the island of Hvar, the event fostered strong emotional engagement with local heritage among high-school students, teachers, biologists and cultural practitioners. It generated a pool of materials and testimonies that inform the Croatian artistic output ('Making the Invisible Visible: Island Pulse') and its contribution to the CO-VISION archive.

10.09.2025 — LAB852
Held 10–11 September 2025 (with a further block 4–5 December 2025) at the Jelsa Municipal Museum and Galerija Monade, the second Local Debate ran an intergenerational programme of guided exhibition visits and age-tailored activities. A lecture by coastal engineer Prof. Dalibor Carević anchored a moderated debate for high-school students on coastal protection, marine ecosystems and the 'no-take' concept, framing science and art as catalysts for social change and validating the developed artworks within the Jelsa Art Biennial context.
