Cluj and the Someșul Mic River
Transilvania Trust
About
CO-VISION Public Panel by the Transylvania Trust Foundation, held in the 15th-century Tailors' Tower of Cluj-Napoca within the 16th Hungarian Cultural Days of Cluj. The panel centred on the historical and contemporary role of the Someșul Mic River in the life of Cluj-Napoca, bridging to the project's digital artwork on the same river and its natural habitat. The discussion traced the river's flora and fauna in ancient times, the medieval townspeople's relationship to land and water, its early-modern/modern transformation into an industrial resource (mills, paper mills, factories) and leisure use (bathing, fishing), the biodiversity damage from 20th-century industrial exploitation, and recent rehabilitation efforts and returning wildlife (beavers, native birds, yellow-legged gulls). Registered 40, actual attendance ~60; ~90% Romania, ~7% Hungary, ~3% Germany; women a majority.
