Scientific text

The Baie de Somme is a coastal area located in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France, along the English Channel. It is a large estuary where the Somme River meets the sea, characterized by extensive salt marshes, mudflats, sandbanks, dunes, and sandy beaches. Climate change in the Bay of Somme region manifests itself through several major environmental challenges. Rising sea levels increase the risks of marine submersion and coastal flooding, while the abrupt topography of the Bresle River basin contributes to river overflow. Furthermore, the alternation between periods of excessive rainfall and prolonged dry spells accelerates cliff erosion, progressively weakening the coastline and increasing the vulnerability of the region’s landscapes.
