About
Fossilized Futures is an immersive digital opera developed within the European project Co-Vision, which explores the relationship between digital arts and local environmental heritage across Europe. The installation combines audiovisual media, kinetic sculptures, and AI-generated content to create a poetic and scientific narrative around river ecosystems.
Blending field recordings of rivers, forests, and urban environments with vocal compositions performed by the Chœur de Chambre de Namur, the work constructs a multi-channel soundscape enriched by scientific data. Artificial intelligence, trained on environmental, cultural, and mythological datasets, contributes to shaping a layered narrative that intertwines deep geological time with present ecological challenges and speculative futures.
At the core of the story are two symbolic figures: Studiella devonica, a fossil species from the Devonian era, and the Atlantic salmon of the Meuse River. Together, they embody the tension between natural resilience and human impact, inviting audiences to reflect on the memory and future of river ecosystems.
The project is rooted in local research and community engagement, including workshops, debates, and collaborations with scientists, students, and cultural partners in Namur. It reflects a broader European dialogue connecting multiple territories and ecological narratives.
Concept
The immersive installation invites the audience to explore its story through an audiovisual experience, moving through the poetic and scientific themes of ancient ecosystems, contemporary landscapes, and speculative futures. It connects multiple pasts and futures from the perspective of today, highlighting the intertwined trajectories of time, environment, and human action. A multichannel soundscape weaves together audio recordings of rivers, forests, and the city, blending sonified river data with ethereal human voices, performed by The Chamber Choir of the city of Namur in Belgium. This digital opera begins at a meeting point, where artists and AI algorithms gather, learning from an archive of scientific data, natural and cultural heritage, river histories, mythology, and biology. Out of this vast confluence emerges not only a technological experiment, but a story: one carried by waters, shaped by time, and retold through human and more-than-human voices. Through this fusion, the work becomes a form of storytelling that flows across histories and geographies. At the heart of the story are Strudiella devonica, a fossil species once living in the region in the Devonian period, and the Atlantic salmon of the Meuse River, whose ongoing struggle for survival reflects the tensions between deep time, natural resilience and human disturbance. Together, they become the narrative's guiding figures, one emerging from deep geological time, the other living through the fragile present, inviting us to listen to the river's long memory and its uncertain future. Presented at the KIKK Festival 2025 in Namur (Belgium), this first iteration introduces the evolving journey of the project. Namur's own river landscapes, shaped by complex ecological, industrial, and cultural histories, offer a resonant context for sharing the work at this early stage. The confluence of European waterways provides a meaningful setting from which to open the narrative, establishing connections between local river ecologies and the international stories that flow through the project.

21.11.2024 — Kikk
Organised by KIKK, the first Local Debate in Namur initiated a collaborative exploration of the city’s natural heritage, with a particular focus on the Sambre and Meuse rivers. The event brought together artists, geographers, students from ESA Saint-Luc’s urban space and heritage program, and local partners including le Delta Namur, the Sambre 2030 project, and the University of Namur (ILEE). Combining theoretical input with site-specific exploration, the workshop fostered creative exchange and interdisciplinary dialogue, with participants mapping local natural features and reflecting on interactions between water, landscape and urban development. This laid the foundation for the artistic project 'Fossilized Futures' by Robertina Šebjanič and Marco Barotti.

The second Local Debate, held 26 March 2025 at Le Delta Arts Center and the University of Namur, combined an immersive hands-on workshop for schoolchildren ('L’eau, un milieu vivant', led by Empreintes) with a guided exhibition visit and a public dialogue among scientists, artists and local community members. Around 45 participants — schoolchildren, teachers, researchers, artists and community members — engaged with river ecology, biodiversity and the future of water resources, calibrating the 'Fossilized Futures' work.
